Email FAQs
Before any questions are answered, it helps to define the following terms first:
Glossary
- Alias
- Aliases are different email addresses that point to one account. Email
aliases that point to the same POP3 email account are created to decrease
the chance of missing a email if someone mistypes an address. For example,
if you already have an email account john@webhosting-faqs.com, you could
create aliases such as sales@webhosting-faqs.com, inquiries@webhosting-faqs.com
so that all emails to those accounts will be transferred to john@webhosting-faqs.com.
- Autoresponders
- Auto responders are automatic email replies sent whenever an email is
received or a certain account. For example, if you are traveling and would
not be checking your email for a week, you can set your auto responder notifying
those who send emails to your account that you are unavailable.
- Email Forwarding
- If you have an existing email account already, you may want to forward
emails to another email account so you only need to manage one account.
To forward emails from email@yourdomain.com to emails@abc.com, it is set
up with the hosting provider of www.yourdomain.com.
- POP or POP3 accounts
- POP mailboxes store email on servers and allow your email client such
as Outlook, Eudora, or Panther Mail to download emails onto your computer.
The number of POP3 email accounts one has depends on the web hosting provider's
package.
- SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
- SMTP allows you to send email from your email@yourdomain.com. If supported,
the server settings may be from the hosting provider of yourdomain.com.
Hosting providers have avoided to support SMTP to decrease spamming using
their outgoing mail servers. Therefore, you may send email (access your
SMTP) through your internet service provider. Usually, your SMTP server
is mail.yourdomain.com or your ISP.
How many email accounts do I have?
The number of POP3 email accounts depend on your hosting package. Some providers
allow you to add additional email accounts for an extra fee. Sometimes, it
may be more economical to upgrade your hosting package, rather than add more
email accounts. The number of email aliases you have for an account is calculated
separately from pop3 email accounts.
